Someday I need to stop buying Fluevogs, but these ones are from 1991 and remind me of the styles I fell in love with as a teenager. They were also $19 brand new at the sample sale today, so really, it wasn’t a hard choice.

During the years that really counted, at least in my memory, that is. During the years that I could have been making really bad choices if I’d found a different group of people to hang out with when I didn’t want to go home.
Through a friend’s older sister I found a group of 20-30 somethings that kept me up all night drinking coffee and playing D&D. They always had space on the couch. They introduced me to table top role playing games, the SCA, Red Dwarf, and Talisman.
I guess a lot of people would have considered them “bad influences” in the traditional sense of the phrase. The first time I got drunk, they supplied the beer. They taught me to drive even though I didn’t have a learner’s permit, let alone a license. I skipped school a fair amount to hang out with them on days they didn’t have to work.
They taught me that people would care for me and be there for me even on a bad day. That making stupid, immature mistakes wasn’t the end of the world, just part of life. They led by bizarre, intense example, throwing themselves headfirst into new hobbies and games and refusing to be embarrassed about having fun. Most of what I know about self-confidence I learned because of them.
Geeks are awesome. Their contagious enthusiasm for things they enjoy is something I hope everyone can experience about at least one activity in their own lives. Me? I still game, read comics, and watch cartoons, and I can geek out nearly endlessly about makeup, weight training/fitness, and cooking, among many other topics. Geeks come from every demographic, after all.
It’s been almost two decades since I was introduced to a group of people who taught me that “grownups” could still play, and my life is a much better one thanks to that.
